Many side hustlers dream about making money on the internet from the comforts of their home. It’s definitely something I’ve always strived for! On the way to achieving this dream, I’ve made some mistakes, and there are some lessons I’d like to share with you. 

First off, working from home with a young family is hard!

I’m the type of person that is easily distracted, and I have a hard time focusing. Working away from my house tends to result in more work completed. I tend to be more focused when I’m at a location away from home.

If you’re not easily distracted and well organized, working from home might be ok for you. But I would still recommend getting out of the house a day or two every week to get a new perspective.

I have three little kids, so if I’m home and they see me making money on the internet, they think I’m ignoring them. They don’t realize I’m working because they don’t understand. For these reasons, it’s easier for me to work done outside of the house.

Second, making money on the internet isn’t as easy as some might make it sound.

I’ve found that businesses that require face-to-face interactions with people are easier to launch and make money from quicker. There’s something about being able to communicate person-to-person that make sales a lot easier.

Build a hybrid model where you’re required to network and build your business around town. When you’re trying to build a business using only online methods, it seems to be tougher. Your chances of making money on the internet are a lot greater when you make human connections, in person.

In my experience:

The only exception to this principle was my Amazon drop shipping business. My wife and I built that business online only, and it was doing pretty well in under six months. I ended up selling the business because it wasn’t something I wanted to do.

Sometimes, we tend to be too big too fast, and it causes a struggle. The assumption of building an online business is you can reach the world with a click of the mouse. If you insist on building an online only business, you should still try to target and build in your local democratic location. This way, you’ll still be able to meet with people in person. With specific targeting, your ads will cost a lot less, and there’s less competition.

Building local and being outside the home for your home business will help you find success much faster.
